Student Finance England is the government-backed service that provides financial support to students studying at UK universities and colleges. It covers two main areas: your tuition fees and your living costs. Without it, most students in England would not be able to afford university. Understanding how it works before you apply saves time, avoids mistakes, and makes sure you receive everything you are entitled to.
Who Runs Student Finance England?
Student Finance England is administered by the Student Loans Company (SLC), a non-profit organisation set up by the UK government. The SLC processes applications, assesses eligibility, calculates entitlements, and makes payments to students and universities.
Applying for student finance is done online through the Student Finance England portal at gov.uk/student-finance. AEC Consultant helps students complete their applications correctly and on time, at no cost.
What Does Student Finance England Cover?
Student Finance England provides two types of financial support: a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan.
Tuition Fee Loan
The tuition fee loan covers the cost of your university course fees up to £9,790 per year for 2025/26. It is paid directly to your university. You never handle this money yourself. The loan covers the full cost of most undergraduate courses at UK universities and colleges.
The tuition fee loan is not means-tested, which means every eligible student receives the same maximum amount regardless of their household income.
Maintenance Loan
The maintenance loan helps cover your living costs while you study, including accommodation, food, travel and other day-to-day expenses. Unlike the tuition fee loan, it is paid directly into your bank account in three instalments across the academic year, typically at the start of each term.
The maintenance loan is means-tested, meaning the amount you receive depends on your household income and where you live while studying.
| Living Situation | Maximum Maintenance Loan 2025/26 |
|---|---|
| Living away from home in London | Up to £13,762 |
| Living away from home outside London | Up to £10,544 |
| Living at home | Up to £7,110 |
Students from lower household incomes receive more maintenance loan. If your household income is below a certain threshold, you receive the maximum amount. As household income increases, the maintenance loan amount reduces, but does not fall below a minimum floor.
Who Is Eligible for Student Finance England?
To qualify for Student Finance England, you need to meet several criteria covering your nationality, residency, and the type of course you are studying.
Nationality and residency:
- You must be a UK national, Irish citizen, or hold settled status
- You must normally live in England
- You must have lived in the UK for at least three years before your course starts
Course requirements:
- Your course must be a designated higher education course
- Your university or college must be an approved institution
- Most degrees, HNDs, foundation years and CertHE programmes qualify
Previous study:
- You can generally only receive student finance for one undergraduate qualification
- Previous study at degree level may reduce or remove your entitlement
For a full breakdown of eligibility, read our guide on who qualifies for Student Finance England.
How Does Repayment Work?
You do not repay anything while you are studying. Repayment only begins in April after you finish your course, and only if you are earning above the repayment threshold.
| Plan | Who It Applies To | Repayment Threshold | Repayment Rate | Write-Off Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan 1 | Started before 1 Sept 2012, or Welsh, Scottish, NI students | £26,900/year | 9% above threshold | 25 years or age 65, whichever is first |
| Plan 2 | Started undergraduate course between 1 Sept 2012 and 31 July 2023 | £29,385/year | 9% above threshold | 30 years after April following graduation |
| Plan 5 | Started undergraduate course on or after 1 August 2023 | £25,000/year | 9% above threshold | 40 years after April following graduation |
If your income drops below the threshold at any point, repayments stop automatically. Any remaining balance is written off entirely at the end of the repayment period. Many graduates never repay their loan in full, and that is by design.
When Should You Apply?
The recommended deadline for new students applying for student finance for the 2026/27 academic year was 15 May 2026. If you have not yet applied, you can still do so. The absolute deadline is nine months after your course start date. For full information on deadlines, visit our guide on the Student Finance England deadline.
Applying early is important because Student Finance England takes 6 to 8 weeks to process a complete application. Late applications risk your first payment being delayed past the start of term.
What Do You Need to Apply?
Before starting your application, have the following ready.
- Your National Insurance number
- A valid UK passport or birth certificate
- Your university and course details
- Your bank account details for maintenance loan payments
- Household income information if you want an income-assessed maintenance loan
For a full checklist, see our guide on what documents you need for Student Finance England.
How Much Will You Receive?
The tuition fee loan amount is fixed at up to £9,790 regardless of your household income. The maintenance loan varies based on your household income and where you will be living while you study.
Students from lower-income households receive the maximum maintenance loan. As household income increases, the amount you receive reduces. Most students do not receive the full maximum amount unless their household income is below approximately £25,000 per year.
Does Student Finance England Cover All Courses?
Most full-time and part-time undergraduate courses at approved UK institutions qualify for Student Finance England. This includes bachelor's degrees, HNDs, HNCs, foundation years, and Certificates in Higher Education.
Not all courses qualify. Courses at private institutions that are not approved by the government, courses delivered entirely outside the UK, and courses below Level 4 do not attract student finance. AEC Consultant checks whether specific courses are eligible before advising students to apply.
What Is the Difference Between Student Finance England and Student Finance in Other UK Nations?
Student Finance England covers students who normally live in England and are studying at a UK university. Students who normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland apply through their respective funding bodies, which have different rules, amounts and repayment terms.
- Scotland: Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS)
- Wales: Student Finance Wales
- Northern Ireland: Student Finance Northern Ireland
The information in this guide applies to Student Finance England only. If you normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, contact the relevant body for your funding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Student Finance England a grant or a loan?
Both the tuition fee loan and the maintenance loan are loans, not grants. They must be repaid once you are earning above the repayment threshold. However, because repayment is income-contingent and any remaining balance is written off after 30 or 40 years, many graduates never repay the full amount.
Can I apply for student finance before I have a confirmed university place?
Yes, and you should. You can apply based on your provisional course choice and update your application later once your place is confirmed. Waiting until your place is confirmed risks missing the recommended deadline and having your first payment delayed.
Does student finance affect my credit rating?
No. Student loans from Student Finance England are not recorded on your credit file and do not affect your credit rating. They are separate from commercial lending and are not considered debt in the traditional sense by most mortgage lenders.
What happens to my student finance if I drop out?
If you leave your course, you stop receiving future payments from Student Finance England. You will still owe the amount already paid, but repayment only begins once you are earning above the threshold in the usual way. Contact Student Finance England and your university as soon as possible if you are considering withdrawing.
Can I get student finance for a part-time course?
Yes, subject to conditions. Part-time students can apply for student finance if their course is at least 25% of the equivalent full-time course. The amounts available are lower than for full-time students and the eligibility rules differ slightly. AEC Consultant can advise on part-time student finance entitlement.
Does student finance cover postgraduate courses?
Student Finance England covers undergraduate courses primarily. Postgraduate students can apply for a separate Postgraduate Loan through the same service. The amounts and rules are different from undergraduate funding. AEC Consultant currently focuses on undergraduate admissions and student finance.
What if my parents refuse to provide their income details?
If your parents or partner will not provide income evidence, you receive a flat-rate maintenance loan rather than an income-assessed amount. In some circumstances, such as estrangement from your parents, you may be able to apply as an independent student. AEC Consultant can advise on this.
How is the maintenance loan paid?
The maintenance loan is paid directly into your bank account in three instalments, typically at the start of each term: September, January and April. Your first payment is released once your university confirms your registration at the start of the academic year.
