Applying for Student Finance England is not complicated, but it catches a lot of students out simply because they start too late or submit incomplete information. This guide walks you through the full process, from creating your account to receiving your first payment.
If you are applying for student finance in the UK for the first time, or you are helping a family member through it, this is the place to start.
What Is Student Finance England?
Student Finance England is the government service that provides financial support to students studying at UK universities and colleges. It covers two things: your tuition fees and your living costs.
The tuition fee loan goes directly to your university. You never see it. The maintenance loan goes into your bank account in three instalments across the academic year, usually at the start of each term.
You do not repay anything until you are earning above £25,000 a year. If you never earn above that threshold, you never repay. Any balance left after 40 years is written off.
That is worth understanding clearly before you apply. A lot of students hesitate because they think they are taking on unmanageable debt. The structure is different from a typical bank loan.
Who Can Apply for Student Finance England?
You need to meet a few basic criteria before you can apply.
You must be a UK national or have settled status, and you must normally live in England. You also need to have lived in the UK for at least three years before your course starts. Your course must be a designated higher education course at an approved UK university or college. Most degrees, HNDs, foundation years and CertHEs qualify.
The part that trips people up most is the previous study. You can generally only get student finance for one undergraduate qualification. If you have studied at a degree level before, it may affect what you are entitled to. If you are unsure about your situation, AEC Consultant can check your eligibility for free before you apply.
When Should You Apply?
The recommended deadline for new students in 2026 is 15 May 2026. That is earlier than most people expect, and it is earlier for a reason. Student Finance England takes 6 to 8 weeks to process a complete application. If you apply late, your first payment may not arrive at the start of the term.
Returning students have until 19 June 2026.
You can still apply after these dates. The absolute deadline is nine months after your course start date. But the later you apply, the greater the risk of starting university without money in your account.
Apply as soon as you have decided on a course, even if you have not confirmed your university place yet. You can update your application later.
The 15 May 2026 deadline has now passed for new students. If you have not yet applied, do so immediately. Late applications are still accepted up to nine months after your course starts, but your first payment may be delayed past the beginning of the term.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you sit down to fill in the application, get these ready.
Your National Insurance number is the most important. Without it, you cannot create an account. If you do not have one, apply for it well in advance, as it can take several weeks to arrive.
You will also need a valid UK passport or birth certificate for identity verification. Have your course details to hand, including the university name and the course title. If you want your maintenance loan to be assessed based on household income, which usually means getting more money, your parents or partner will also need to provide their financial information through a separate linked form.
International students or those with non-standard residency status may need additional documents. AEC Consultant can tell you exactly what applies to your situation.
How to Apply for Student Finance England – Step by Step
Here is the full process in the order you need to follow it.
Step 1: Create Your Student Finance Account
Go to gov.uk/student-finance and create an account. You will need your National Insurance number to register. Set aside around 30 minutes for this step. Choose a password you will remember and note down your Customer Reference Number once your account is created.
Step 2: Start Your Application
Log in and select the relevant academic year. Fill in your personal details, contact information and bank account details. These need to be accurate. Errors here are one of the most common causes of payment delays.
Step 3: Add Your Course and University Details
Enter the name of your university and your course. If you are applying before you have a confirmed place, use your first choice. You can change this later. Do not wait until results day to start your application.
Step 4: Apply for Your Maintenance Loan
You will be asked how much maintenance loan you want. If you want the full amount based on your household income, you will need to provide your household income details. Your parents or partner complete this through a separate form linked to your application. If you want a flat-rate loan instead, you can skip the income assessment, though you will typically receive less.
Step 5: Upload Your Supporting Documents
Depending on your circumstances, you may need to upload proof of identity such as your passport or birth certificate. Scan documents clearly and in colour. Blurry or incomplete uploads are a common cause of delays.
Step 6: Submit and Wait for Your Entitlement Letter
Once submitted, Student Finance England will process your application. This takes 6 to 8 weeks for a complete application. You will receive an entitlement letter confirming your tuition fee loan and maintenance loan amounts. Check your account regularly for any requests for additional information.
Step 7: Register at the University and Receive Your Payment
Once your course starts, your university confirms your attendance to Student Finance England. Your first maintenance loan payment is released within a week of that confirmation. Your tuition fee loan is paid directly to the university separately.
How Much Can You Get?
The tuition fee loan covers up to £9,790 per year and goes directly to your university.
For the maintenance loan, the amount depends on where you will be living while you study.
| Living Situation | Maximum Maintenance Loan |
|---|---|
| Living away from home in London | Up to £14,135 |
| Living away from home outside London | Up to £10,544 |
| Living at home | Up to £7,110 |
These figures apply to the 2025/26 academic year. The maintenance loan is paid in three installments, typically in September, January and April.
How Does Repayment Work?
You start repaying in April after you finish your course, but only if you are earning above £25,000 a year. Below that threshold, you pay nothing regardless of how much you borrowed.
Once you are above the threshold, you repay 9% of everything above £25,000. If you earn £30,000, that is 9% of £5,000, which works out to £450 a year or £37.50 a month. It comes out of your salary automatically, similar to taxes.
If your income drops below the threshold at any point, your repayments stop automatically.
Any balance remaining after 40 years is written off entirely. Many graduates never repay the full amount. That does not mean the loan was not worth taking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for student finance if I have studied before?
It depends on what you studied and at what level. As a general rule, you can only receive student finance for one undergraduate qualification. If you studied a qualification at the same level as the one you are applying for, your entitlement may be reduced or removed. AEC Consultant can check your specific situation before you apply.
What if I apply after the 15 May 2026 deadline?
You can still apply. The absolute deadline is nine months after your course start date. Applying late means your first payment may not arrive at the start of term, but you will not be permanently excluded from student finance. Apply as soon as possible.
Do I need a confirmed university place before applying?
No. You should apply as soon as you have decided on a course, using your provisional choice. If your place changes, update your application. Waiting for confirmation is one of the most common reasons students miss the recommended deadline.
How do I know how much maintenance loan I will receive?
The amount depends on your household income and where you will be living during your studies. Lower household income means a higher maintenance loan. You can get an estimate using the student finance calculator on the government website before you apply.
Can I apply for student finance if I am a mature student?
Yes. There is no upper age limit for applying for Student Finance England. Mature students are eligible on the same basis as school leavers, provided they meet the residency and course requirements. The one area to watch is previous study. If you completed a degree earlier in life, it may affect your entitlement. AEC Consultant can check your eligibility before you apply, free of charge.
What happens to my student finance if I take a gap year?
If you have already applied and then decide to defer your university place by a year, you need to contact Student Finance England and let them know. Your application will be moved to the following academic year. You do not need to reapply from scratch. If you have not yet applied, simply apply in the year you plan to start.
Can I get student finance for an HND?
Yes. Higher National Diploma courses at approved UK colleges and universities are eligible for Student Finance England. This includes the tuition fee loan and the maintenance loan. AEC Consultant works with students applying for HND courses across business, health and social care, construction management and digital technologies.
How do I update my student finance application if my course or university changes?
Log in to your Student Finance England account at gov.uk/student-finance and update your course details there. You can change your university or course at any point before or during your studies. Your entitlement will be recalculated if the tuition fees differ. If you are unsure how a change affects your funding, contact an AEC Consultant, and we will advise you for free.
