If you already hold a relevant Level 5 qualification such as an HND, our BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care (Level 6 Direct Entry) route — sometimes searched for as a health and social care top up degree — lets you complete your honours degree in a single further year rather than repeating content you have already covered.

HND in Health and Social Care Practice

An hnd health and social care route is a two-year, practice-focused alternative that qualifies for Student Finance England. It suits students who want a more hands-on, vocational style of learning and the option to top up to a full honours degree later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about studying health and social care with AEC Consultant.

A health and social care degree can lead to roles such as social worker (with further professional qualification), care home manager, support worker team leader, health and wellbeing coordinator, safeguarding officer, and roles within the NHS, local authorities and private care providers. Many graduates already working in care use the degree to move from front-line support into supervisory or management positions.

Yes. Our BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care with Foundation Year is designed for students without A-Levels or with lower grades than standard entry requirements. The HND in Health and Social Care Practice also accepts students through relevant experience or an interview-based assessment. Your AEC Consultant advisor will confirm which route matches your background.

Yes. All of our health and social care courses, including the Foundation Year, Level 6 Direct Entry and HND routes, are eligible for Student Finance England. This covers a Tuition Fee Loan paid directly to your university and a Maintenance Loan for living costs, both based on your personal circumstances. Visit our Student Finance guide for full eligibility details and current loan amounts, or speak to an AEC Consultant advisor for a free assessment.

These are different qualifications. A Foundation Year is an extra preparatory year added to the start of a full honours degree, such as our BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care with Foundation Year. A Foundation Degree is a separate, standalone two-year qualification offered by some providers. AEC Consultant's partner universities offer the Foundation Year route, not a standalone Foundation Degree, so check with your advisor exactly which qualification a course leads to before applying.

An HND in Health and Social Care Practice is a two-year Level 5 vocational qualification. If you already hold an HND or an equivalent Level 5 qualification, the BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care (Level 6 Direct Entry) lets you complete a full honours degree in one further year, without repeating content you have already covered.

Many students on our health and social care courses already work in the care sector. Several partner university courses are timetabled over two days a week, with some evening options, so you can continue working while you study. Ask your AEC Consultant advisor about flexible scheduling when you book your free consultation.

No. While many applicants already have care experience, our Foundation Year and HND routes are also open to school leavers, career changers and mature students with no prior care sector experience. Your AEC Consultant advisor will talk through your background and recommend the most suitable route.

AEC Consultant provides free admissions guidance for the HND in Health and Social Care Practice, BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care with Foundation Year, BSc (Hons) Health, Wellbeing and Social Care (Level 6 Direct Entry), and the Certificate in Higher Education Health and Social Care with Foundation.

Not always. Many of our partner university health and social care courses are applied for directly rather than through UCAS, which can mean a faster decision. Your AEC Consultant advisor will confirm the correct application route for your chosen course and guide you through the paperwork at every stage, free of charge.
