Do I Qualify for Student Finance England? Eligibility Explained

Whether you qualify for Student Finance England depends on a handful of criteria covering your nationality, residency, the course you are studying and your previous education history. Most UK students qualify without any issues. This guide explains each requirement clearly so you know where you stand before you apply.

Nationality and Residency

To qualify for Student Finance England, you must be a UK national, an Irish citizen, hold settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Refugee status holder. You must normally live in England and have lived in the UK for at least three years immediately before the first day of your course.

If you moved to England recently or have spent significant time abroad, your residency history may affect your eligibility. This is one of the areas where individual circumstances vary most and where the AEC Consultant's free eligibility check is most useful.

Your Course

Your course must be a designated higher education course at an approved UK university or college. In practice, this covers most full-time and part-time degrees, HNDs, Higher National Certificates, foundation years and Certificates in Higher Education.

Previous Study

This is the area that catches the most people out. You are generally only entitled to student finance for one undergraduate qualification. If you have previously studied at degree level, even if you did not complete the course, it may affect what you are entitled to.

The rules around this are specific and depend on factors including why you left the previous course, how many years of funding you received, and what level the previous course was. It is worth checking your individual situation rather than assuming you are not eligible.

Leaving a previous course early does not automatically disqualify you. In many cases, students who withdrew from a previous course still qualify for a full or partial entitlement. AEC Consultant can check this for you free of charge.

Age

There is no upper age limit for Student Finance England. Students in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond apply and qualify every year. Mature students are assessed on exactly the same criteria as school leavers.

International Students

Most international students on a student visa do not qualify for Student Finance England. However, there are exceptions. EU students who arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020 and hold settled or pre-settled status may qualify. Certain refugee statuses and humanitarian protection statuses also qualify.

Who Does Not Qualify?

• Students studying for a qualification they already hold
